Overuse Injuries

It seems strange that for the non-contact sport of running a lot of people suffer injuries from running. A few of these are people who trip and fall, or step off a curb incorrectly, but most are caused by what is called an overuse injury.

The good news is that by following a few simple tips, you can prevent overuse injuries.

An overuse injury is basically the overuse of an muscle, joint, or connective tissue (ligament, tendon, etc.).

The body part that is being overused will fatigued faster and will break down during repetitive use. The pain and discomfort may come on slowly over time, or one day something may just snap.

Your body improves by giving it an overdose of work, such as running. Your body is then broken down, and it starts to repair itself so it can handle that work again. If you train correctly, you can keep increasing the work load.

If you work out/run too much, too fast, too soon you will probably get an overuse injury.

Here are some tips to prevent overuse injuries.

1) Cut back on your running. This is kind of hard for most of us runners. We like to go out and run, no matter what. If you keep experiencing pain in the same area of your body you need to cut back your running soon, before you get an actual
injury. I can't stress this enough.

2) Increase your time/distance by only 10% per week.

3) You can train your body to withstand an increased load on it. That is what my course called, "How to Run Like a Deer, Injury Free, Forever" is about.

It might sound odd that you need to exercise for running, but it is a good thing to do. And, very few people teach this. Think how other athletes train for their sports. For instance, football players lift weights to make themselves stronger and bigger.

I don't believe you should run everyday. And, most other trainers believe that also. In fact, it is recommended that runners do some kind of cross training. My course makes a great cross training workout.

Overuse injuries are the most common in runners, and the easiest to prevent. No runner should ever have to suffer from an overuse injury.
